Testimony from an au-pair
Hi, I would like to tell you briefly what my assignment in a missionary family was like and why I can definitely recommend it to you.
The family were missionaries in a third world country and I spent 10 weeks with them. I was 19 years old at the time and I mainly helped in the household and with the children (cooking, laundry, looking after the children, doing school with the children (homeschooling), cleaning etc.). Nevertheless, I also had the opportunity to get to know the missionary work better (e.g. visiting a prison, street preaching, visiting people, doing children's lessons myself). I could also see and visit several places from the country. I think that's an important point, that you know roughly what the family expects of you and the time you spend with them so that you don't have completely different expectations!
Concerning the culture of the country you go to, I personally find that on the one hand you get to know a lot through the family and their experiences (much more logically than if you visit a country on your own for example 2 weeks), on the other hand I was also in the same country for a while with a local family, and that gave me completely different opportunities to really live in the middle of the culture.
I find it very enriching and would really recommend anyone to do an assignment like this. It greatly broadens your horizon, you get to know new people and new cultures, you get out of your perhaps comfortable life, you hopefully experience the Lord in new ways and grow in your faith, and last but not least, you might be able to encourage the family if they are rather lonely on their mission field."
Second Testimony
I was able to support two different families abroad for several weeks at the ages of 28 and 30. My tasks included meal preparation, doing laundry, keeping the accommodation clean, and sometimes grocery shopping. Additionally, I took care of the "preschool-aged children" during homeschooling time. In the afternoons, we played outside a lot or went on excursions. It was an enriching experience, as I experienced and learned a lot in a short amount of time: different cultures and countries, mission work abroad, childcare, etc. One challenge, for example, was the language barrier with the locals (on the street or in the community, for example).
It was nice to quickly become a part of the family and share everything. I can only recommend investing time in such a valuable experience.
Third Testimony
Hi there, I was able to help in a family abroad when I was 18 years old. I stayed in that family for about 10 weeks. It was a wonderful time where I was able to learn a great deal about family life in a third world country. My primary jobs were to make meals, help with the homeschooling and take care of the pre-schooler. During that time, I was able to learn that there are different ways of homeschooling and running family life without one being better than the other. One thing I'm very thankful for is the great amount of offline time I had due to lack of wifi. This was a very beneficial time for me spiritually since it obliged me to read a lot in the Bible and spend time with the Lord in prayer. I’d very much recommend an experience like that to any young sister who is interested in the mission field. It’s a great way to experience in a small measure what a missionary's life practically looks like.
Forth Testimony
Hi, I am 21 years old and spent three months abroad helping a family. My main tasks consisted of housework, keeping the children occupied, and doing various activities with them. My duties included washing dishes, cleaning, trimming hedges, shopping, going to the park, helping the students with their homework, baking, cooking, and, of course, playing with the kids.
The fondest memory for me is the time spent with the family. I grew especially fond of the children, and the experiences I gained are invaluable.
Sometimes, the weather was challenging because it was very warm, yet I still wanted to complete all my tasks.
In hindsight, I wish I had known beforehand how wonderful the experience would be. I hadn't given it much thought or had any specific expectations, so the positive experiences surprised me all the more.
